Tiger in My Tank

Book 1 in the Jupiter Heart Series.

A greeting card artist.
10,000 kilometres of open road.
A solo sales road trip to kickoff a lifetime.

Jupiter Hart survives massive cuts in her government office only because she’s twenty, so she quits on principle, prints thousands of greeting cards and heads out on a selling trip with her heart on her sleeve and her cards on the table.

Once she’s out there in the wild, it’s sink or swim. To forge forward or even just drive home, she’s got to keep the gas tank full and pay off the printer. She faces artistic rejection, paranoia about being alone, tragic loss, romantic failure…oh yeah, and she gets entangled in a terrorist plot to blow up Niagara Falls.

Will she give up? End up in jail? Actually deliver that midnight love letter? Will her old beater of a car get her home?

“Unputdownable, hilarious, cringingly relatable. I wish I could read it again for the first time!”

Supply List

Tiger in My Tank takes place around the year 2001. Some classic items were available then, but these lists are made as if Jupiter were doing the trip now, with the intention of preparing you (and me) to take such a trip today.

I’m not getting paid by any of these companies, I’m just a superfan. I did put an emphasis on Canadian companies/Canadian made products. Jupiter needed people to take a chance on her micro company, giving a shout out to other people trying to make a go of it in the world market is only fitting.

Road Trip- Gear

  • Hot Core – Kona Backpack – The most essential item for any trip is a good pack. It has side pockets for water bottles, pockets everywhere, a waist belt and comfortable shoulder straps. I love everything about this one! It comes in 40L, 60L & 75L sizes. BC.
  • Taiga – Sleepwalker Sleeping Bag – You can unzip the feet and armholes, put the belt around your waist and wear this thing – I love it! I don’t get out of bed until I say it’s time. Vancouver, BC.
  • Chawel – Hybrid HD Surf Towel – This is the best towel ever. It’s a floor length poncho that’s big enough to get changed inside. It has a hood and a zip pocket. It dries super fast too. We have some for every day and some for the emergency kit. Perfect beach wear. Highly recommend! BC.
  • Toyota – Jupiter drove a 80’s Toyota hatchback. I’ve had a few and loved them all. I once took a trip from Victoria to Calgary in a friend’s Toyota Matrix for $60 in gas. Toyota Rav4 is manufactured in Canada and I would love to do a cross Canada road trip in the hybrid today. Much more comfortable to sleep in…

Road Trip – Food

  • Denman Island Chocolate – Toasted Hazelnut, Cool Mint, Zesty Orange, Razzle Dazzle, Gingerama, Coconut Squared – That should get you started. Comes in shapes too – frogs & hearts are my favourite! These bars can change the course of a day. When you feel giving up coming on, unwrap the foil on one of these bars and take 15 minutes to savour and refocus your energy. It works! I’ve completed thousands of successful experiments. Great hostess gifts, if you can share. Denman Island, BC.
  • Salt Spring Kitchen – Savoury Collection – These make great hostess gifts if you have the self control not to eat them all yourself. A decade ago I had a stall at the Salt Spring Market beside Melanie. I was addicted to her Spicy Tomato Savoury Spread, also she’s a super kind and loving soul. Salt Spring Island, BC.
  • Old Dutch – Ketchup Chips are Jupiter’s top favourite. Shout out to Winnipeg, MB.
  • Hawkins Cheezies – Aged cheddar cheezies. My Mom would have these when I was a kid and I thought they were gross. The day I tried them and loved them I realized I’d become a woman. If you’ve never had them frozen, I’m so happy I could be the one to introduce this new experience to you. (Since Hawkins Cheezies don’t have an online store or social media, I linked to London Drugs to buy them online. I love London Drugs!) ON.

Road Trip – Things To Wear

  • Kits – Sadye Sun Sunglasses – The perfect shades are an absolute road trip essential. They’re glamorous and offer privacy. I wear mine in every crowded situation, even indoors. Kits makes prescription sunglasses at reasonable prices. I have 4 pairs of their glasses and love them all. They even have a first pair free deal. Vancouver, BC.
  • WestCoastTees – Zentangle Bear Scuba Hoodie – It’s good to have a hoodie you love, so you don’t start inhabiting somebody else’s. Completely theoretical, never done it myself. Surely not. Vancouver Island, BC.
  • OddSwanJewelry – Gold Hoop Earrings – Notched to create sunburst. Just the right amount of class and sparkle. Light & classy. Victoria, BC.
  • Pure Anada – Mascara – Mascara is the most basic war paint. This is the best mascara I’ve ever tried. Mercury-Free, Gluten-Free, Paraben-Free, Ecocert approved ingredients, Hypoallergenic – safe for sensitive eyes, pH balanced. Highly recommend. MB.
  • Moody Bee – “Bee-Have” Tinted Lip Balm – If you’re not a lipstick person, tinted lip balm is where it’s at. Wholesome ingredients and a nice selection of colours to choose from. Kimberley, BC.
  • Love Medals – Heart Shield Necklace – Jupiter gets to borrow a necklace that makes her feel good. Feeling like you’re put together can help you act like you have it together. Plus, don’t we all deserve a medal for surviving the last couple years? This company makes medals to give (or give to yourself) with a certificate that it’s an award for things like friendship, kindness, family, courage, leadership, love, achievement, etc. I love this idea and the necklaces are awesome. Victoria, BC.
  • Baffin – Chush Bootie Electric Blue – Jupiter sleeps in her car for much of the trip, these would have helped. Comes in 4 colours. Stoney Creek, ON.
  • Northern Ultralight – The Hippie Fanny Pack – For the things you need, right when you need them. No spoilers. Nelson, BC.
  • Girly Bits Cosmetics – So Long, and Thanks For All The Fish Nail Polish – This polish is 5-FREE, vegan, and cruelty free. I love the colour and purity, but what wins me over is thinking of the book by the same name. ON.

Map of Shops Along the Way

These are some of the actual shops that bought from me on the trip I took. I highly recommend a stop at all of them. Each had their own charm. They make excellent pit stops on any road trip! You’re guaranteed to find a cool keepsake at every stop! 55 shops have hung in there for the last 20 years, that’s something to celebrate! Congratulations! To all the shops who closed, you are missed, thank you for your help along the way. (There may also be some who I couldn’t find because they don’t have any internet presence.)
